The Invitation to Dancing With the Waco Stars (DWTWS)

Hi Rodney

(We received) your name as a potential STAR for our DWTWS fund raiser to benefit the Waco Family Abuse Center.  We pair 12 STARS - 6 male and 6 female - with 12 PROS and each couple performs a 2-3 minute routine.  The event this year is on October 26, at the Waco Hippodrome.

I can send you further details if you are interested.  It's a great experience and very unique fund raiser, and we'd love to have you be a part.

When the email came I thought it surely a prank.  I don't dance.  Can't dance.  Won't dance.

My wife, when I told her about it, laughed merrily.  "They asked you?"

That reaction was not atypical.  People who know me likely fall into two groups regarding my dancing.  One who would say they have never seen me dance (the majority, for good reason).  The other who have and would politely refuse comment on what they observed.

The invitation was real.  Worse, the cause extremely worthy.

I sought advice from friends and family.  Those that thought I should do it were (I think) as much looking forward gleefully to watching me attempt to dance as anything else.

I was reminded of the story from 2 Samuel in the Bible of King David "dancing before the Lord with all his might" (vs 14).  His effort drew criticism to which he responds (vs 21 - 22):

"I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes."

And so, like David, I said yes to becoming undignified, humiliated...to celebrate before the Lord.  The lifting up of those in need - the mission of the Waco Family Abuse Center - the goal of this terrifying endeavor.

Welcome to my Dancing With the Waco Stars (DWDTS) Journey

The 8th annual DWDTS  fundraiser for the Waco Family Abuse Center . VIDEO of our dance now posted! How I will always remember this journey...dancing with joy!

Final Week Notes

Dancing with the Waco Stars is over...and Stephanie and I were extremely pleased with our performance.  We cannot thank those who supported us and the Family Abuse Center enough!  I hope to provide some more details but as of the Monday before the show we had over $11,000 in votes and ticket sales.  Not enough to win...but that just means FAC won all the more overall.  I think over $120,000 as of Monday totals. I also hope to have video to share of our dance.  Yes, I will share...the goal met:  I am not ashamed (far from it).  Stephanie is a miracle worker. In the meantime, a few final week photos and thoughts. DRESS REHEARSAL:  Sunday was dress rehearsal at the Waco Hippodrome.  We had one run through of the routine.  It went well, but I slept very, very poorly that night running through every mistake in my mind.  Nerves suddenly as the event became very real!!! HAIR (no makeup!) and TIME TO DANCE Thursday we did a short rehearsal ...

Video Montage/Interview

September 11th we were filmed to create the video that will play prior to our dance on October 26th.   A few short clips from the interview portion (sorry for the sound quality...) Many have probably wondered about what it would be like to attempt to train Rod: We like the reaction at the end of the first clip...continuing: They also filmed us doing a run through of the routine...our blog videographer (Mandy) left at that point as she wants to have some surprise at the final (hopefully much improved) product.  Of course, getting tickets to the event will ensure you too can see the results of all this practice!!!  Not to mention giving us more votes 😏
